DISAPPOINTMENT for some - relief for others.

A late August tradition was observed across the country today as students and teachers braved sweltering heat to return to school and learn this year's GCSE results.

The most successful pupils were brought forward to 'meet the press' and boost their schools' images, while advice and encouragement was discreetly provided to those who had not fared as well as they had hoped.

Langley Academy posted its best results in its eight-year history, boosting its five A*-C including English and maths score by 14 per cent on last year, and St Joseph's High School headteacher Ciran Stapleton was equally as pleased with his students, as they made fantastic progress with their results.

Progress levels were also high at St Bernard's Grammar School, as 60 per cent of students achieved an A* or A grade.

Headteacher Michael Stimpson said: "It is the second best ever A* and A mark we have had, after we recorded highs in 2013.

"Combined with what we believe is the best progress ever, it is a great set of results. That is based on our internal data at the moment with official figures to come in the autumn, but it shows that the progress of this cohort is the best ever."
